Invisalign Final Retention Period

Congratulations on the successful completion of the active part of your Invisalign treatment! The primary purpose of a retainer is to retain the teeth in their current position. When a tooth is orthodontically moved, the ligaments holding the tooth to the bone become stretched, and the relaxation of these fibres takes six months to one year.

Research has shown that LIFETIME retention is the only method to permanently maintain the results of your aligner treatment. Thus, it is essential to follow the instructions given by our doctor for retainer wear. If the retainers are worn properly, they will continue to fit and your tooth positions should remain stable. If you do not maintain your teeth with retainers, any subsequent treatment will be subject to appropriate charges.

Recommended retainer wear is full time for one month followed by night time wear for life. When the retainers are not worn, please store them in a water tight container with hydrogen peroxide. This solution only needs to be changed once per week. This solution will help to keep your retainers clean. Please rinse the retainers before putting them in your mouth. Do not ever “boil” the retainers or put them in the dishwasher.

Aligner treatment is not “guaranteed” for life because it is a treatment and not a cure, hence the necessary retention period. Failure to wear retainers as directed, even for a short period of time, may cause a rapid change or “relapse.” Therefore, it is important that you follow these specific instructions to maintain satisfactory results:
