Exploring the Differences Between Invisalign® and Traditional Wire Braces

Our Danforth dentist proudly offers clear aligners as a modern alternative to traditional orthodontics

There are many people who aren’t very confident in the appearance or positioning of their teeth, or who may suffer from discomfort due to an improper bite or crooked smile.

Fortunately, however, patients who want to straighten their teeth have more than one option to pick from. Long gone are the days where metal braces were the only method available!

If you’ve ever considered taking steps to achieve a straighter smile, here’s a brief comparison of the two techniques: Invisalign® clear aligners, offered by our Danforth dentist, and traditional wire braces which have been around for a long time.

Sleep apnea oral appliances can help to improve a person’s quality of sleep while also reducing daytime fatigue.

Invisalign® clear aligners are the perfect modern alternative to traditional metal braces. Virtually undetectable, detachable, and comfortable to wear, patients who use this method of teeth straightening usually see results after 6 to 18 months of use (varying from patient to patient depending on their unique case). Braces, on the other hand, generally require an average of 2 years’ treatment in order to achieve the desired result (again, depending on the patients’ needs).

When comparing cost, although Invisalign® is generally more expensive than wire braces, many patients don’t mind – as they would rather be wearing an appliance that is not noticeable to others, and that can be removed before eating or for anything else deemed necessary. More good news? They’re just as successful at straightening teeth as wire braces are (considering the case is not too complex).

Some patients will require traditional wire braces due to case complexity.

Patients with more complex or severe cases of malocclusion (crooked teeth/improper bite) will need to opt for traditional wire braces, as Invisalign® is only suitable for mild to moderate cases of malocclusion.

With braces, follow-up visits will be necessary about once a month, while Invisalign® will require patients to visit their dentist every 4 to 6 weeks in addition to changing their aligner every 2 weeks as their teeth shift into their new positions.

It’s no question that both of these methods of teeth straightening are equally effective for mild to moderate cases, and each offer their own set of benefits. While the decision is ultimately yours, your dentist can help you to make an informed decision by recommending an option that may be more appropriate for you.
